OLD NORTH CHURCH, Boston, Mass. – Note the old box pews. In colonial days, each family had its own box (stall) in the church, and parishioners would place a hot brick in a grate and place it in the middle of their box during the church service. There was no heat in the church and the hot brick kept the family’s feet warm.
